Visit Vaxholms Kastell for a visit to the fortress. The boat trip takes about 50 minutes. The fortress, which was to become Hududstaden's protective defences, is located in the middle of the strait between Vaxholm and Rindö. Already during Gustav Vasa's time in 1560, the first manned fortification was ready on Vaxholmen. This was the foundation until today's fortress was completed in 1863. The castle took 30 years to build and when it was finished it could not be used as a defense facility as the walls could not even withstand an attack. Soldiers, families, servants, cooks and craftsmen lived on the island and it was like its own community.

Take a boat trip to the fortress on the island - Vaxholms Kastell. Keep the fortress which unfortunately did not live up to the standard and instead became a prison, staff building and training facility! Pay a visit to Vaxholm's Fortress Museum. You can also eat food and coffee on the island.
